When to message SVH vs call 911

SVH is not an ER and not an after-hours emergency line. Portal messages are not monitored in real time for emergencies.

Green — next visit. Mild nausea, early fullness, or a change in bowel habits. Use conservative tips.

Yellow — message the clinic. Persistent vomiting, you cannot keep fluids or protein down, or you cannot take the next dose. Do not change your dose on your own.

Red — call 911. Severe abdominal pain, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, dehydration you cannot correct, or anaphylaxis.

Patient Education

Understand your care.

Education is part of safe treatment. These resources help you understand your care, medications, nutrition, and movement. They do not replace your visit, and they do not promise results.

Understanding your treatment

How GLP-1 / GIP medications work

These medications mimic natural hormones that help regulate appetite, digestion, and blood sugar. They can reduce hunger and slow stomach emptying so you feel full longer. They are used with healthy habits under clinical supervision. Individual responses vary.

Brand-name medications only

We prescribe only FDA-approved brand-name medications (Wegovy, Zepbound, Foundayo) when a clinician decides they are appropriate. These are obtained through manufacturer cash-pay programs and shipped to your home. We do not use compounded versions. Medication cost is separate from membership.

Why care is physician-supervised

Treatment requires proper evaluation, gradual dose increases, side-effect monitoring, and ongoing oversight by Alabama-licensed physicians and nurse practitioners.

What monthly membership includes

Scheduled telehealth visits, clinical oversight, support from our Alabama team, and coordination of brand-name medication through manufacturer programs. Medication cost is separate.

Starting medication

What to expect in the first weeks

Reduced appetite often begins within one to two weeks. Mild nausea, fullness, or changes in bowel habits are common and often improve as your body adjusts.

Slow dose titration

Doses are increased gradually. Moving up too quickly raises the chance of side effects. Steady titration is used to support tolerance. Do not change your dose unless your clinician tells you to.

Timing of doses

Injectable medications are typically taken once weekly on the same day. Oral medications (including Foundayo and oral Wegovy, if prescribed) are taken as directed by your provider and the product Instructions for Use. Food and water rules differ by product. Foundayo is generally taken once daily; follow the label you receive.

Storage and handling

Follow the storage instructions that come with your medication. Pens, vials, and tablets have different rules. Keep products in original packaging, away from extreme heat or light, and out of reach of children.

Managing side effects

Common side effects

Nausea, early fullness, constipation, diarrhea, mild abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and reduced appetite — especially during dose increases. Many symptoms improve over time.

Conservative management

  • Eat smaller meals and stop at the first sign of fullness.
  • Avoid greasy, spicy, or very sweet foods during adjustment.
  • Stay upright after eating.
  • For constipation: increase fluids and add fiber gradually.
  • For nausea: bland or cold foods, ginger, and smaller portions.

Hydration and electrolytes

Drink fluids throughout the day. Electrolyte-containing fluids can help if you have fatigue, lightheadedness, or reduced intake.

Green — mention at your next visit

Mild stomach symptoms such as nausea, early fullness, or a change in bowel habits. Use conservative tips. Tell us at the next visit.

Yellow — message the clinic

Persistent vomiting, you cannot keep fluids or protein down, or you cannot take the next dose. Message SVH. Do not change your dose on your own.

Red — call 911

Severe abdominal pain, dehydration, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or anaphylaxis. SVH is not an ER and not an after-hours emergency line.

Missed dose, storage, and travel

If you miss a dose, follow the official Instructions for Use. Never double up. Do not leave medication in a hot car. Short travel is fine only if you remain an Alabama resident.

Nutrition and lifestyle

Overhead plate with grilled chicken, vegetables, and Greek yogurt with berries

Protein

Adequate protein helps preserve muscle during weight loss. Many adults benefit from about 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kg of ideal or adjusted body weight, personalized by your provider. Spread intake across the day.

Fiber

Supports digestive regularity. Increase gradually and pair with plenty of fluids. Sources include vegetables, berries, chia, ground flaxseed, and small portions of whole grains.

Probiotics and gut support

Some patients use probiotic foods (Greek yogurt, kefir) or a supplement. Focus first on hydration, protein, and gradual fiber.

Core nutrition principles

  • Protein first at every meal.
  • Fill most of the plate with non-starchy vegetables.
  • Add measured carbohydrates and healthy fats as tolerated.
  • Choose nutrient-dense foods.

Daily calorie guidance (educational only)

Individual needs vary. A moderate deficit is commonly used. Because these medications often reduce appetite, aggressive restriction is usually unnecessary. Prioritize protein and nutrient quality. Avoid extreme low-calorie diets without medical guidance.

Physical exercise and movement

Why movement matters

Regular activity helps preserve muscle, support metabolism, and improve energy. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Core recommendations

  • Daily walking or similar low-intensity movement.
  • Strength training two to three days per week.
  • Progress gradually.
  • Maintain protein intake and hydration.

Ongoing care and follow-up

Visit schedule

Initial comprehensive visit, then a one-month follow-up, then every three months thereafter — or sooner if needed.

Preparing for visits

Note side effects, energy, appetite, weight trend, and questions. Confirm current medications and Alabama residency.

Local provider communication

Continue care with your primary care physician and specialists. Keep them informed of medications prescribed through Southern Virtual Health.

Alabama residency

You must live in Alabama and remain in Alabama for the duration of treatment.

Long-term care

Maintaining progress

Many patients continue a maintenance dose while reinforcing nutrition and movement habits. The aim is sustainable weight stability. Individual responses vary.

Transition planning

Your provider will discuss options as you approach your goal — continuing medication, adjusting dose, or planning a careful transition. Do not stop treatment without a plan from your clinician.

When plans change

Adjustments are based on response, side effects, health status, goals, and clinical judgment during scheduled visits.

Brand-name vs compounded

Wegovy, Zepbound, or Foundayo only when appropriate. The prescription goes to LillyDirect or NovoCare. You pay the manufacturer. We do not use compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Who should not start

Not in Alabama or leaving the state, under 18, pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, history of MTC or MEN2, pancreatitis or a serious GLP-1 reaction, a compounding request, or emergency needs. Final eligibility is decided at the visit.

Labs and documents

Photo ID. Alabama residency proof (license, utility bill, or lease). Labs from the last 90 days through the portal only — not email. Your clinician confirms the panel. It often includes CMP, A1c, lipids, TSH, and CBC.

Manufacturer checkout

The clinician sends the prescription. The manufacturer emails you. You pay them. They ship to your Alabama address. Message SVH if the email or the box never arrives. Membership and medication are two separate charges.

Education FAQ

Will I be prescribed a medication?

Only if a licensed clinician decides it is appropriate after review. Screening and intake are not a guarantee of treatment or a prescription.

Is the drug included in membership?

No. Membership is cash-pay clinical care. You pay Eli Lilly or Novo Nordisk for brand-name Wegovy, Zepbound, or Foundayo mailed to your home.

What if I am already on a compounded GLP-1?

Tell us in the portal. Compounded product is not continued through SVH. A clinician decides whether a brand-name option is appropriate.

Can my PCP stay involved?

Yes. Continue care with your primary care physician and specialists. Keep them informed of medications prescribed through SVH.

What if I feel sick on the medicine?

Use the conservative tips in Managing side effects and email support@southernvirtualhealth.com or message the portal. For emergency symptoms, call 911.

Do I still need to eat well and move?

Yes. Protein, resistance training, and daily walking support muscle and overall health alongside treatment.

Is this emergency care?

No. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for a medical emergency.
